A graphic designer doesn't always get an opportunity to work on a brand, or piece of packaging that has so much potential for flexibility. The Cheeky Monkey wine kit brand is just that, and it has been a lot of fun!
Looking at the monkey, he needed a make-over.
The original Monkey design was created a number of years ago, however there seemed to be two real issues... He wasn't cheeky enough, and he wasn't flexible. A limited release wine lit became the perfect opportunity to test the waters changing the monkey illustration.
The project began with Vineco's concept for "Blends that Rock", and as the CM brand was a best seller they wanted their packaging to be standout. We explored a number of Monkey options for them, some cuter, some following the originals circular cheeks and line art style... eventually we settled on a look everyone liked.
Designing a monkey that could rock.
There were a few laughs when thinking about all the 80's style rock moves our new monkey could bust out into... Should we have him at the end of a knee slide? What about his tongue, out like KISS? A few sketches later and playing a solo with a confident smile won out.
Our designers got to work exploring the background possibilities while the monkey was finalized. We worked through a few design elements and new illustrations for the bottle labels, posters and additional pieces... All the packaging came together with a rockin' crowd (pity we couldn't include lots of denim jackets) and some sparkles (camera flashes).
So far the new monkey design, packaging and labels have been a huge success, and out designers are already working on the next release!
